Kisumu city residents want police who have stayed too long in the lakeside city transferred, claiming they are colluding with criminals.
Kisumu City Residents Voice (KCRV) Chairman Audi Ogada called for reshuffling of the officers, saying that some of them were renting out their uniforms to criminal gangs to terrorise residents.
He added that the officers were helping the criminals walk out of police custody before being charged in court.
Mr Ogada further accused the officers of being behind disappearances of suspects in their custody.
“Some of these officers have been here for years and are mingling with locals for reasons beyond service. They have grown too close to criminal elements in this time so much that they even become friends," he said.
“We do not want police officers who are compromised. It is only right that we get new faces every so often,” he said in an interview.
Ogada said crime was making a return to the lakeside town and that new officers should be brought in to weed out gangs, arguing that transfer of police bosses alone was not effective.
