Residents of Nakuru town have complained of police harassment in the area at night, starting as early as 730pm.
The residents have further said that the police have converted them into ATMs, forcing them to part with cash or risk arrest for ‘various crimes’.
They say police officers who patrol along Kenyatta avenue and other roads connecting to the avenue harass them, pretending to be hunting for criminals.
Amason Mwangi, a businessman in the town said the unidentified police officers are making their life hard, forcing them to close their businesses early.
“I met these police officers on my way home around 730pm, they arrested me and after few minutes they asked for a bribe, I gave them Sh500 for them to free me.
Ali Mwinyi, a hotelier in the town said the police are acting inappropriately and called for action to be taken against them.
"Instead of helping us feel secure, the police are now making our life harder. They should be concerned about criminals and not peaceful citizens who have not committed any crime," said Mwinyi.
