Athi River children officer has several incidences of defilement go unreported in both Mavoko and Kathiani Sub-Counties within Machakos County.
Addressing journalists in her office on Friday, Faith Kamau said most of the residents kept quiet on the vices even though they were escalating in the region.
"Several defilement cases in both Mavoko and Kathiani Sub-Counties are never reported despite the fact that they are on the rise," said Kamau.
Kamau said the situation might had been caused by the fact that majority of the residents in the region were either not aware of the constitutional rights of the child or were just ignorant.
According to Kamau, majority of the residents reported defilement cases to police stations within the region, and failed to report the same to the children's department offices.
"Most of the children guardians from Mavoko and Kathiani Sub-Counties report defilement cases directly to police stations with only a few seeking our services whenever such incidences occur," said Kamau.
The officer said the guardians only report to the children's department offices when they sense that the police stations were not handling their cases seriously.
Kamau said the residents should be well vast with children's department officers and the critical roles they play in protecting children’s rights and ensuring justice is served whenever their constitutional rights are infringed.
