Residents of Athi River Sub-County living along the river banks have been urged to move to higher grounds to avoid being swept away by floods.
Speaking in his office in Athi River Town on Wednesday, Athi River deputy county commissioner, Kodeck Makori, said there were indications that more people would be affected by the rains if they do not move to safer zones.
"I urge all the residents of Athi River Sub-County who live along river banks to move to designated safer areas within the sub-county," said Makori.
Makori said the ongoing rains rains would make rivers in the region swell and break banks thereby adversely affecting the residents living near the water bodies.
He said residents living in the slum areas within the sub-county are also likely to be affected due to poor drainage systems.
The commissioner ordered chiefs from the region to conduct several barazas across their locations in a bid to sensitise residents on the need to move from flood prone areas so as to save lives and property.
Makori said the government has the mandate to ensure the lives of all residents are protected hence those who defy orders to vacate danger zones will be forcefully evacuated.
