[A scene where a speeding car hit and killed a resident at the Junction of Death. Residents are appealing for bumps to control vehicles.] (youtube.com)Garissa inhabitants have appealed to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to erect speed humps at a popular black spot near Garissa town.
The black spot popularly known as the ‘junction of death’ near Garissa’s main market has claimed a dozen lives with the latest being an incident where a 17-year-old student was knocked and killed by a speeding car.
The residents who on Wednesday jointly unleashed their anger on social media to let their fury known called on KeNHA to speedily erect the speed humps to save lives.
“Last month one of our freelance broadcast members highlighted the story of Garissa's killer highway dubbed the ‘Junction of Death’. The cries that were covered and aired in the video were never felt at all by those whom we elected in to office,” a joint message posted by the residents read in part.
According to records available in the traffic department, they said, three people have been killed at the spot since the documentary was aired last month with the latest incident being Thursday's tragedy that killed 17-year-old Abdiwahab from Young Muslim School.
The residents said unless speed humps are built at the spot, they will hold protests to push for KeNHA to erect the same.
“The question that begs an answer is; why are our leaders silent about this continuous road carnage at the junction?”
“What is role of KeNHA and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority? Can't they do the same like other counties whose roads are managed by highly skilled road officers and most importantly road signs?”
