Gatundu South residents have applauded the move to start a university in the area saying that it will bring development.
The proposed university will be a constituent College of Moi University and will be known as Mama Ngina Kenyatta University College.
According to the chairman of the proposed project Prof Martin Njoroge, the university main campus will be set in Mutomo.
"We are proposing that the main campus be at Mutomo. Some two other satellite campuses will be in Ruburi and Kiganjo," said Njoroge.
Njoroge added that the university will not only uplift education level in the area but will also create jobs.
He added, "We will have development here as roads will be made; we will have a good hospital too as we expect the students and staffs to be many."
He praised the area MP too saying he is in the frontline of making the project a success.
Prof Njoroge was speaking at Mutomo, the proposed location of the university on Sunday when he and other Moi University administration staff paid a visit to the area.
