Residents of Mung’etho Village in Juja Sub-County have asked authorities to mount an extensive crackdown on illicit brews.

This is after two people died on Monday following a disagreement after a drinking spree.

They said consumption of brews is slowly returning to the area and authorities must arrest the situation.

According to a village elder Andrew Ngure, John Maingi is said to have taken poison after killing his 25-year-old friend Simon Mwangi during the drinking spree.

The residents who spoke on Tuesday when area MP Francis Munyua visited, Maingi had invited Mwangi to his place for a drink when they disagreed and a fight ensued leading to Maingi’s suicide after realising he had killed his friend.

“We have been experiencing such cases and we believe it’s high time the authorities rectify the situation which has seen many of residents from this area die,” Ngure said.

Juja police boss Luke Odiwuor has warned local people against brewing and consuming illicit liquor saying that although local authorities had mounted local crackdown following President Uhuru’s order, cases of people brewing and consuming illicit liquor are still rampant.

He said the information on the incident was reported to his officers and that investigations have been launched following the death of the two who are yet to be buried.

The bodies were taken to General Kago Morgue in Thika Town.
