Residents of Gesima Ward have blamed the government over slow construction of Metamaywa- Kebirigo highway, that was launched during the Grand coalition government former president Mwai Kibaki and leader Raila Odinga.

According to the residents, the highway was first initiated during the era of former Kitutu Masaba MP the late George Anyona, but stalled due to insufficient funding by subsequent governments.

On Saturday, at Gesima Market, the residents urged the ministry of Roads and Transport to facilitate quick construction of the highway that has rendered the area impassable during this rainy season.

“It has taken over 20yrs to complete this road. We understand that the contractors have been facing financial constraints before but that is inexcusable given the determination of Jubilee government that released money for the same,” said former area councilor Julius Nyachieo.

He directed his fury to Kenya Highway Authority for failing to monitor the process since it is their obligation to ensure all contracts are finished within the stipulated time.

“Kenya Highway Authority is to blame for the menace. The ministry released money long ago hence its their mandate to ensure all is expeditiously done. This laxity by the contractors must be addressed by them as soon as possible,” added Nyachieo.

Nyachieo further vindicated area MP Timothy Bosire, who has since received scathing attacks from area residents apparently for failing to present the matter for discussion in the house.

“Our MP has nothing to do with this. He ensured that the government disbursed money for this exercise and his work was consequently done. Let us desist from blaming him always,” he added.

The highway connects Kitutu Masaba, West Mugirango and North Mogirango constituencies, and residents believe it will help their transport their agricultural products easily and affordably across the county.
