Irate residents of Gilgil blocked the busy Nakuru-Nairobi highway protesting over the increased hit and run cases at the area. The resident carrying twigs and placards engaged police in running battles as they demanded speed bumps to be placed in the area. They lit bonfires using tires and demanded for an audience with the Nakuru County Minister of Roads. According to the residents, two people had been knocked in the area in just 24 hours. “Yesterday a man was knocked down and today we lost another. Vehicles are not able to stop here as there are no bumps. Many people have lost their lives or have been maimed for life due to these accidents,” said Goeffrey Maina. He stated that they had raised the issue of speed bumps with the area Member of Paliarment Mathenge Nderitu to in vain. “How many more lives do we have to lose before the situation is controlled?” he quipped. Benjamin Mbugua, a local leader called on the National Transport Safety Authority to act with immediate effect. “We live in constant fears especially when our children are going to school. Cases of children who were maimed or seriously injured while crossing the roads have become a common phenomenon here. The fact that we have a weigh bridge so close and hence a high flow of trailers is also a major concern,” he added.
