Residents of Syiokimau estate in Athi River District have called on the Machakos County Government to construct water reservoirs in the region to hold storm water whenever there are downpours.
Addressing the press in Syiokimau on Saturday, the residents said they were worried of the situation when expected rains fall depending on the topography and type of soil that the region has.
"We are very worried of the situation if the expected rains poor due to topography and type of soil we have in Syiokimau," said resident George Mire.
Mire, who was the spokesman of the residents, said the estate had in the past experienced lots of structural damages and lost of property due to storm water.
He disclosed that several houses were swept by stormy water and other households plus chicken some time in March last year because there were no reservoirs and tunnels to respectively hold and lead the water away from residences.
The spokesperson said the situation would worsen if proper precautions were not taken due to increased numbers in terms of population in the area.
Mire said the drainage systems were poor with no sewer systems in the region, adding that it would be disastrous if the rains fall before the structures were constructed to contain the situation.
He called on the county government to speedily intervene so that residents are not affected, property lost when the expected rains fall.
