The area sub-county children officer Nathan Kyule said most defilement cases in Kangundo are reported after failed negotiations with the suspects.

Kyule said some of the witnesses involved in such cases pullout after being compromised thereby crippling the cases.

"Defilement is a big crime and you have to prove to the court beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty of the offense for him to be jailed. It is difficult for the victim to get justice if there is no witnesses and evidence," Kyule said.He said parents should know that victims of defilement suffer from psychological trauma other than getting pregnant and disease infections.

" It doesn't end there, these children grow with a notion in their minds and if something is not done earlier the trauma could stay in their life indefinitely," Kyule said.

Kyule said there's are chances of evidence being tampered with thereby making it hard for the victims to get justice if defilement cases are reported late.

He said early reports would not only ensure that justice prevails but also enable prevention of certain diseases which the victim could contract.

"A defilement case should be reported within 72 hours, that way the victim might be prevented from pregnancy or contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STIs)," Kyule concluded.
