Yathui chief Stephen Wambua said many pit latrines in the area had collapsed due to flood waters hence unsafe for usage by the locals.

"It's not here alone, the whole of Machakos County has been affected and it's risky to use unsafe latrines which may cave in anytime," Wambua said.

Wambua spoke to this writer in Yathui on Tuesday.

He said the residents should bring down unsafe latrines and build news ones.

Wambua urged the locals to ensure that they construct toilets to keep diseases at bay.

He said a couple of schools had equally been affected, their toilets had collapsed.

Wambua told the residents to desist from night travels due to increased cases of drowning in the region.

"We have lost people due to drowning, residents should avoid traveling at night. Wait until you can see where you are stepping, we can't continue losing people," he said.

He advised residents aged 70 years and above to take advantage of government extension of the enrollment of senior citizens to benefit from 'Inua Jamii' initative.
