Residents of Nyatieko in Manga Ward Kitutu Chache South have raised an alarm over open plans to relocate a waste disposal site by the Kisii county government saying its a health hazard.
Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka opposed the move to relocate the dumpsite to Nyatieko they held street demonstrations demanding that such plans be shelved.
“It was some individuals who were invited to attended the forum, the county needs to involve all the stakeholders, “ said Onyonka.
Mr Richard Nyabando on whose land the dumpsite is being erected has complained of receiving threats from area residents who want him to relinquish the land offer.
“I am not aware that the county wants to use my land as a dumpsite. I was shocked to find them surveying my land,"Nyabando said.
Despite assurances by Governor James Ongwae that the dumpsite matter will be dealt with smoothly, Nyatieko residents have opposed the relocation of the dumpsite from Gesonso to their area saying they were not consulted or involved in the initial stages.
It should also be remembered that in 2016, the residents of Gesonso led by Douglas Ogari protested in the area saying that they will not accept the dumping of waste in the area, noting that they already have dirty sewage water, and could not put up with the dumpsite.
“We are here to represent our people and to say no to the proposed dumpsite project at Gesonso. We got the information on the dumpsite project from the Daily Nation and we are saying no to the project because we already have one here and the sewage is not even maintained,” said Ogari.
