A group of Nakuru residents took to the streets to clean up Nakuru town on Friday.

The clean up exercise, organised by Nakuru beauties “Warembo na Lucia Kinuthia” and Street Nakuru Group saw more than 50 volunteers collect garbage from around the town centre.

Street Nakuru Chairman James Wakibia said the move was meant to challenge residents that they ought to be involved in maintaining the environment.

“We have moved past making noise on twitter and facebook and decided to collect dirt on the streets. We are passionate about the environment and hence we opted to help in the cleaning of the town,” he added.

Miss Tourism Nakuru Laura Chumba said they intend to carry out more of such cleanups.

“It is our social responsibility to ensure that we live in a clean environment,” she added.

The event, which doubled up as a photo shoot for the #ISupportBanPlastics campaign, saw hundreds of residents sign a petition set to be presented before the Nakuru County Assembly seeking to ban plastics in the county.

The campaign is meant to collect 10,000 signatures and present them to Parliament seeking to have MPs discuss the problem of the bags in the society and ways to control their manufacture.
