The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has condemned residents of Burinda in Busia County after they torched a police station and a land rover.
This comes after enraged residents burned down the police station over alleged shooting of a boda boda rider for resisting arrest.
The inspector general of police Joseph Boinett warned the residents from taking law in their own hands.
He said unruly behavior by some boda boda riders who have formed gangs to harass members of the public will not be tolerated.
“With a serving Police Service and a robust Judiciary in place, it is unacceptable for anyone to take the law into their own hands. This is likely to foster anarchy and break established order in society,” said the IPOA in a statement.
IPOA added that it has been holding officers to account for unprofessional conduct having had several successful prosecutions.
“It defeats the purpose of police reforms when the public turn and commit the same offences they complain about when the police commit them.” Read the statement.
The national police service launched an investigation to establish the arsonists that burned down the police station.
IPOA has urged aggrieved civilians to use the legal mechanisms for lodging police complaints.
