Residents say that there is a pungent and choking smell coming from the lake in recent days.

"When our animals take this water they are becoming dull,” said Ole Wampari, a cattle herder.

The herders noted that the water is making the animals’ lose weight as well as weakening their bones.

"When they drink the water and lie down, they are unable to stand up unless they are assisted,” he added.

Vincent Ng'ei an officer from Food, Fisheries and Water Agency said that they will take the water samples to carry on tests.

"We will be able to give a full report of what the problem is once we do the tests,” said Ngei.

Fred Kibos, a resident, said that currently the water has become salty.

"The water used to be fresh but now it has turned saline. It also has an unusual green colouration," notes Kibos.
