Several residents of Athi River in Machakos County are counting losses after Rivers Athi and Mto Wa Mawe broke their banks due to the ongoing rains pondering the area.

Those seriously affected are locals living along slums and estates along the river.

Tenants at Sunset Boulevard Apartment were on Thursday were forced to stay indoors the whole day after they got trapped in their houses due to flood waters.

Residents who spoke to Hivisasa said they were woken up by the floods which submerged some of the vehicles in the apartment’s parking at 4.00 am.

Houses at ground floor have been affected.Other locals affected are those from Jamcity, Kanaani, Kasuitu, Kwa Mang’eli, Kinanie and City Carton slums.

Kwa  Mang’eli  Resident  Patrick Matei said most of the houses at the slum had been affected by the floods.

Matei said flood water had gained entry into their houses therefore endangering their lives.

“We are worried here, people are trapped in houses as you can see. Our children are the most affected,” Matei said.

He said the residents fear for being swept away by the floods.

According to the locals, the floods destroyed their households including clothing, food, electronics, and furniture among others.

Farmers along the river are equally counting losses after their crops were swept away by the floods.

The residents are now calling for the government’s intervention.

They blame the situation on poor planning and illegal damping in Athi River.

Matei said the government should evacuate residents from danger zones and provide them with necessary amenities including those who have lost their property to floods.

He said the situation was a time bomb for Cholera outbreak.Several bridges and roads have been cut off from the region due to the flood waters including Stage 39, Kasuitu and Mto Wa Mawe bridges.
