Residents of Naka, Nakuru have expressed concern over the resurgence of monkey and baboon raids in the area.

This follows a series of raids by the animals in the area.

On Sunday, the residents claimed more than twenty houses were raided by the animals.

“We came out of church to find the animals had messed up the houses with food stuffs spread everywhere,” said Ann Mwangi.

She said there has been an resurgence of the raids in the last one week.

“Even leaving a small baby around is now a problem as we fear that they can be attacked by the animals any time,” said Peter Theuri.

They said the monkeys also posed a major threat to children and women in the area.

“We have seen them attack the children on several occasions. Even pregnant women are not spared of the beating,” said Anita Mureithi.

Kenya Wildlife Service Community Warden Omari Muchanje admitted that the monkeys were a problem.

He called on the affected families to report the cases to them.

“We have already started carrying out community awereness. We are aware that they move from the park to go and look for food. It is a major problem that needs constant control. We even have the same problem in Njoro,” he cited.

Mr Muchanje attributed the problem to the dry spell that had hit the area.

“The lifestyle of the people is also a contribitign factor. They attack houses which throw away food and once they come and lack the food they end up raiding the place,” he added.

Mr Muchanje cited that the platoons moved from very early in the morning and in the evening.

“We are working with Bushfire Conservation Group and we will be waiting for the animals there every evening ,” he cited.
