Residents have protested illicit sand harvesting on roads at Mitaboni in Kathiani, Machakos County.
The locals led by their spokesman Peter Kyalo lamented that there is massive destruction of roads in the region due to sand harvesting.
"Sand harvesting has been a problem in our area. Our rivers have dried up now, the vice has been brought upon our roads," Kyalo said.
Kyalo said the most affected roads included; Kenol-Kathiani and Mitaboni-Miumbuni roads.
He said they haven't benefited from sand harvesting and proper measures should be taken to ensure that illegal sand harvesting ends.
"Our rivers have been destroyed by sand harvesting. Kwa Mukusu and Muvaa rivers are worse. Even with all that destruction, the residents aren't benefiting from it," Kyalo said.
The residents now want the Machakos County Commissioner Matilda Sakwa to take action against anyone found scooping sand on the roads and rivers.
These protests come weeks after Sakwa issued a stern warning against harvesting sand on roads.
