The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has been asked to take action against churches conducting night prayers using blaring loudspeakers in Kangundo town and its environment in Machakos county.
The area residents said they have been spending sleepless nights for the past few weeks following a serious noise pollution after several churches emerged in the area conducting their functions at night.
Joseph Kieti, a resident in the area estate in the town, claimed that there were many new churches that had emerged in the area and were holding night prayers which were interfering with people’s peace at night.
“We want Nema to enforce the law preventing noise pollution. It should not be seen to be a toothless bulldog because the masses still have confidence in its duties,” said Kieti.
They threatened that they may be forced to take unspecified action against the churches if Nema fails to act within the next one week.
They suggested that night crusades must be controlled and should be allowed to go on up to a specific time to make them friendly to people’s night rest.
They claimed that if left to continue late into the night, they provided a conducive environment for thugs to raid people’s houses as they made it very difficult for residents to respond to distress calls from victims of night attacks.
