They said the situation poses health risks not only to those trading in the market but all locals especially children who are more vulnerable to health hazards.

This is after waste bins within the market and its environs remained unemptied for several weeks leading to odour.

Human rights activist Chris Kyalo said the bins are full of rain water therefore emitting a foul smell.

"Murky waters are emerging from the bins which is a health hazard to the people living around," Kyalo said.

Kyalo urged the Machakos County Government to hasten and empty the bins which are overflowing with waste in a bid of ensuring clean and sustainable environment.

He said filled dustbins during the rainy season pose as health hazard considering given that children are home for school holiday.

"Our children play around but the environment isn't favorable, the county government should act fast and empty the bins," Kyalo said.

Kangundo sub county administrator, Ann Masai, is yet to comment on the issue since his office was  deserted when this writer visited it to seek his comment on the matter.

Masai's secretary said she had attended a workers' meeting held in Machakos town by Governor Alfred Mutua.
