Residents of Juakali estate in Athi River, Machakos County have protested over poor waste disposal
Led by their spokesperson, Samuel Mweri, the protestors said they feared contracting diseases due to raw sewerage and wastes being disposed into the open.
"The untreated sewerage is being discharged carelessly. The acid degenerating the value of the land, the wastes is scattered all over thus posing health risks," Mweri said.
Mweri spoke to this writer in Athi River town on Monday.
He said poor waste management in the estate and its environs is a time bomb stating that the areais prone to Cholera outbreak.
"We have lost lives to Cholera outbreak in this estate few months back, our fear is who will die next due tothe filthy situation," Mweri said.
Mweri said the murky waters emit foul smell.
He called for speedy intervention of the area public officers to avert the situationand save lives.
"The environment is uncouth and unwelcoming, it's a health hazard in waiting. We are at risk of contracting Cholera due to the uncontrolled waste disposal," Mweri added.
The situation is further exacerbated by poor disposal of solid waste including plastic bags and ingress of foreign matter such as stones into the sewer thereby logging them.
Mweri said many families do not have toilets in the estate hence improperly dispose of human waste.
