A section of Nyamira residents have demanded an apology from Embakasi South MP Irshad Sumra following his remarks that the Abagusii community are good at planting and transporting bhang.

The residents who spoke to this writer on Sunday said the remarks by the Sumra should be investigated to ascertain what he really meant.

He is claimed to have made the comment when he accompanied ODM party leader Raila Odinga on a tour of the county on Friday last week.

Led by businessman Simeon Mocheche, they urged the MP to apologise to the community following the statement.

“As the business community from Nyamira we are unhappy with the sentiments which were made by the Embakasi  South MP on Friday in Nyamira that we are good in planting bhang and transporting it. We would like the MP to apologise to the community,” Mocheche said.

On other hand, religious leaders have also cautioned politicians who visit the region to shun utterances that cast the community in bad light.

Pastor Ronald Ogentoto of Matutu PAG Church said that it was wrong for the MP to say the community only knows how to plant bhang.

“As the church we are unhappy with the remarks which were made by the MP. Let him know that the Abagusii are hardworking people and they are not in that deal as the MP stated,” Ogentoto noted.
