A section of residents of Madogo area in Garissa County on Thursday held demonstrations demanding an explanation from the police over increased insecurity cases.
The residents took to the streets to protest the killing of two watchmen by unknown people at Madogo trading centre.
The irate residents expressed disappointment over the failure by the police to arrest the culprits saying such killings have happened before.
Mr. Ibrahim Abdirahman who was among the protestors appealed to security agencies to speed up investigations into the murder.
Mr. Abdirahman said thorough investigations must be done to ensure that those behind the killings are arrested and jailed according to the law.
“Investigations need to be done by the police and those behind the killings should be arrested. The government also needs to increase security,” he said.
The residents said one of the watchmen was beheaded and the other strangled by the unknown people who stole a safe from the hardware store the two had been guarding.
During the protest, the angry residents who engaged anti-riot police in running battles for about five hours lit bonfires and set a vehicle at the hardware store's premises on fire.
The police led by Garissa OCPD Aaron Moriasi were forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowd that had paralysed transport on Garissa-Nairobi road.
