Residents of Mauche area in Njoro sub-county on Tuesday held demonstrations, resisting the promotion of the area sub chief.
The residents claimed that Rachel Cherono was unfit to serve as a public officer. They accused her of abusing office, saying they will not allow her to be promoted to be the area chief.
Their attempts to eject her from the office were blocked by a group of other residents supporting her. The residents have accused the chief of tolerating illegal groups and failed to improve security in the area.
“We will not allow her continue serving in this area, they better take her to some other place,” said James Tanui, a resident.
Tanui alleged that the sub chief often takes bribes and that she is resistant to change.
The sub chief, however, denied the allegations, saying some people were aiming to tarnish her reputation.
She asked anyone with evidence to present it instead of tarnishing her image as a public official.
Sub-county commissioner Mohammed Noor cautioned residents against making such grave accusations without supportive evidence.
He, however, asked those with evidence against the sub chief to bring it forward, saying action will be taken immediately if there is any truth to the matter.
