A community dam in Mavoko Sub County has overflown following heavy rains being experienced in Eastern region.
The Athi River's Portland dam burst its banks making its waters mix with that from River Athi thereby making it hard to differentiate between the dam and the river.
A spot check check by this writer at the dam revealed that the waters have submerged water pumps at the dam, properties of Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company hence interfering with their operations.
A security guard who spoke to this writer in Athi River town said they had vacated the dam for fear for their lives.
"I have been working at the dam for close to ten years as a security guard hired by a local security firm in Athi River town, my colleagues and I decided to run away from work because the storm waters were security threat to us," said Thomas Omongi.
Godwin Odhiambo said it was not easy for any one including the dam attendants to move closer to the dam since the area was completely flooded after the dam waters mixed with that from River Athi.
Mr Odhiambo said they will only resume work when the dam's waters normalize.
The dam is one of those managed by Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company under the Machakos County government.
