Machakos residents on Tuesday were educated on safe disposal of old electronics that they no longer need in their residential homes or work areas.
The education programme carried out in Machakos town and the environs was a collaboration between Machakos County governments through environment Department together with the Prudence initiative.
Speaking while addressing residents and the press in Machakos town, Machakos Director of environment Nicholas Nzioka stated that the old electronics could be exchanged with money if taken to the respective companies for recycling.
“This programme will ensure the environment is safe from hazardous metals from electronic machines. The County government cannot promise to provide money for the exchange but we assure a platform of exchanging the old electronics with different electronic manufacturing companies,” said Nzioka.
The manager of Providence initiative environment conservation initiative Peninah Mwada stated that the initiative is working with Sony Company, HP electronic manufacturing companies and others to ensure worn-out electronics are disposed in the right way.
“Stop dumping old electronics in pits or old stores when you can exchange them for some money and conserve our environment,” she said.
However, Nzioka stated that the education programmed was aimed at enlightening the residents and getting their view and take of the programme. He further stated the County government is yet to pass the rules and the process of the exchange.
