Residents of Kisii County are living in fear of a possible waterborne disease outbreak after a sewer line in the town broke down.
The effluent has been spewing into some streets, into streams and river Nyakomisaro and into Daraja Mbili Market, one of the largest open-air markets in the region.
Small businesses, such as eateries are on the verge of closing down because of the unpleasant odour emanating from the raw sewage.
Ms. Nancy Moraa said that their children are at a risk since they innocently play on the streets while the sewerage is leaking.
“The raw sewage poses a great danger to young children who play near sewers and eat food from vendors nearby,” said Ms. Moraa.
Hotelier, David Bosire said the area is a high-risk area of waterborne disease outbreaks and we will be forced to close if the government doesn’t fix this problem.
“Our businesses have been affected by the raw sewage that has been flowing freely into the streets. We’ve lost customers due to the unpleasant odour emanating from the raw sewage,” said Mr. Bosire.
National Environment Management Authority County Director Tom Togo, however, said they were addressing the problem adding that they are working with Gusii Waters and Sewerage Company (GUWASCO) to ensure that the problem is solved.
“We have received reports of raw sewage flowing freely in some parts of Kisii Town and in our rivers. We have our officers on site,” he said.
