As the rains continue, families living along Tana River are living in fear of a waterborne diseases outbreak.
Hundreds of families have already been affected by floods in North Eastern forcing them to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere.
Families in Mororo, Bakuyu and Ziwani are seeking shelter on higher grounds in Garissa town after their houses were submerged and valuables washed away.
The chairperson of Sala ward, Ms. Halima Ilesa said the area is a high-risk area of waterborne disease outbreaks following flooding.
She said that there are no latrines in the area and children are playing dangerously near the river oblivious of the risk.
Ms. Ilesa asked the government to start preparing early for a possible outbreak of water-borne diseases.
She further urged the government, Red Cross, and donor agencies to move with speed in providing food and non-food items saying the worst affected by the floods are children, elderly and women.
Ms. Ilesa added that the affected residents have been told to go to Madogo Primary School but they are reluctant because they will be evicted when schools re-open.
“We are also fearing an outbreak of malaria since most of the residents don’t have mosquito nets. We are appealing to the government and humanitarian agencies to come to our aid,” said Ms. Ilesa.
