Many of Kibera residents who had been asked to vacate the area to pave the way for road construction have started vacating.

The residents had earlier refused to move from the houses saying they had no place to go. They also said the notice given to them was abrupt. They went as far as hiring a lawyer to challenge the map that was to foresee their houses demolished to allow for the road construction.

According to Ruth Akoth, the residents have decided to take action since they have not heard any report from the tenants concerning the court case.

‘‘All my friends have left. People fear that their houses will be demolished. What will you do if a bull dozer demolishes your house with all your property? That is why they have decided to move,’’ she said.

‘‘I am sure if the court would have addressed the issue, people would have stayed. We all know we cannot fight the government,’’ stated Akoth.
