Officials from the Kisumu County county government led Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture Chief Executive Achie Alai on Thursday graced the inaugural Fish Fiesta carnival held at the Hippo Point grounds in Kisumu.

Alai who was accompanied by Nerry Achar who is Finance Chief Executive lauded the residents for turning up in large numbers to help make the ceremony successful. 

Traditional foods and delicious fish cuisines were on display as residents took turns to sample the delicacies.

According to Alai the fiesta offers a grand opportunity for the county to make a mark in the tourism industry.

"Kisumu has great potential and everybody has to play his/her part in promoting its strengths," Alai said.

Given the success of the event, she said she would hold talks with Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala to make the festival an annual Easter carnival.

Achar who is acting Chief Executive for Physical Planning said county government is keen to ensure that riparian areas around the lake are conserved and protected from land grabbers.

"We recognise that our fish cuisine is renowned nationally and internationally. So we have decided to celebrate it at a Fish Fiesta over the Easter period," Governor Prof Anyang Nyong'o recently said ahead of the celebrations.
