Resident of Kihoto sub-location ,Lakeview Ward in Naivasha Constituency had a lucky day when they woke up to tonnes of free meat from a dead hippo on Thursday.
According to a resident, the said hippo had been electrocuted by a live wire at a near by commercial farm after it emerged from lake Naivasha.
Dozens of residents from Kihoto and the surrounding environs ascended on the animal with pangs and started scrambling for free meat .
Public Health and KWS officers arrived later only to find the carcass had been put in sacks by the residents and taken to their homes.
Humphrey Ouma ,an official from the Department of Public Health , Naivasha Sub County said that the residents were exposing themselves to danger by eating the uninspected meat.
“Uinspected meat is not fit for human consumption and residents are risking their lives by consuming such”, said Ouma.
James Mwangi, a resident of Kihoto said the residents defied orders from the local chief not to eat meat from the animal .
“Most residents said that they had not eaten meat for a long time and it was their day to have the free meat “, Mwangi.
The area chief Daniel Kamau warned the residents against eating dead wild animals and urged them to report the incidents to his office or KWS for further actions
The chief also called on the KWs to do everything to minimize human-wild conflict in the area.
