According to some of those interviewed, they said it's only two weeks since the program started but they have been able to see changes as roads have been cleared and there is a decline in crime.

Christopher Onyambu a resident at Kiogoro added that in the past most youths in the area used to be idle forcing them to indulge in drinking and stealing something which they believe will remain a thing of the past.

“Kisii town has seen a drastic reduction in excessive consumption and brewing of illicit brew,” said Onyambu adding that reports on criminal activities have reduced.

An NYS official Edwin Kamanda said NYS recruited 900 youths in April 2016, most of whose health, financial, and social, as well as moral standing, has since been radically transformed.

He lauded the youths who abandoned their past lives in robberies and prostitution, saying the programme was a non-political but aimed at empowering the youths by improving their living standards.

He praised the youths for their contribution to cleaning the environment, a role he said has helped improve hygienic standards, especially in informal settlements that were prone to diseases.

He urged the youths to engage in small businesses and build on them gradually so as to realise tangible financial gains.
