A section of South Mugirango residents has today given Kisii County Government green light to carry on with the construction of the much-anticipated sugar complex at Nyangweta.
Giving the nod today when they participated the public hearing on both positive and negative impacts on Friday the residents have vowed to support the project.
Speaking at the event Nyangweta elders led by Samson Okiomeri called upon those opposing the project to stop it and urged them to focus on the positive part of the factory.
"We call upon the county government to convince the national government on how the project will help locals more so in terms of employment creation and that's why we as locals fully support the project," said Okiomeri
The residents further pleaded with Environmental Cabinet secretary Keriako Tobiko to give county government of Kisii a go-ahead to construct the sugar complex as the residents have agreed to plant more trees as well as create more forests to raise the ratio of forest coverage in the area.
"We understand the points rose by Tobiko and we would like to let him know that we're ready to plant more trees to meet the Government's recommendations of 10% forest coverage in the next six months," said Okiomeri
The residents' recommendations come at a time the National government has failed to give the County government a green light for the construction of the sugar complex citing it will have more negative impacts that the positive impacts.
Kisii county on his side has maintained that the construction of the complex will go on as planned as they will comply with the Government's conditions.
