The residents have opposed the Kenya Pipeline Company's project that will see the pipes pass right through their estate, saying it poses a great danger to them considering the flammable nature of oil.

The residents who are also required to evacuate the area, have expressed their unwillingness to leave, claiming the ownership of the land which they say they acquired from the defunct Mombasa Municipal Council.

Kenya pipeline has already started digging trenches to lay the pipes, a move that the residents have said could be hazardous, especially if a leak occurs.

However, Kenya Pipeline Company corporate communications manager Jason Nyatino said the land belongs to the company, and will be used to ease oil transport, which currently relies heavily on the use of trucks which are slow and break down constantly.
