A section of Naivasha residents in Longonot ward have expressed discontentment with the month-long voter registration exercise which ends Tuesday.

They said the duration was not short especially for those who had applied for their national  identification cards when the process was started.

However, others who were not able to register due to other reasons are also pleading for the extension of the deadline needless to point out the massive media campaigns.

“I applied for my ID mid last month, and I am yet to get it so that I can register as a voter. I will be locked out of registration in the event that I don’t have it by Tuesday. I think my reason is genuine unlike others who wait till the last minute and only ask for extension when they realise the time is over,” James Kigo said.

Others who cited some other challenges were also seen to be keen on calling for extension to allow for necessary arrangements, terming the one-month period as too short.

“I work in the Coast region but I prefer to vote in my home place. I had to excuse myself from work so that I can travel home and register which needs some few days off from work yet I am in the formal employment. I arrived earlier today which is the d-day. An extension of the period will allow others who have the same challenge to arrange with their employers and exercise their democratic right,” added Eunice Waceke, a resident.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission was targeting  four million new voters by the end of the exercise though by Friday last week, only 800,000 had registered.
