The residents claim that the illicit brew business is on the rise and the county government should intervene to end the illicit brew menace.

Speaking this morning at Laini Saba area, Nancy Mwangi said that men who have turned into drunkards have failed to fulfil their responsibilities towards their families.

"Women and children are suffering in the slums only because of irresponsible fathers spend their cash on alcohol," she noted.

Another resident, Brenda Kioko blamed illicit drinkers for disrupting and breaking their families.

"It is embarrassing to see a man with a wife and children sleeping on the road drunk. The county government should regulate the illicit brew business in the slums that has been on the rise in the recent days," said Harrison Mutuku, another resident.

Mutuku added that many illicit brew business owners operate without licences from the relevant authority and that police officers in the slums only go to such places to collect.

‘‘If this situation continues, many people within the slums will lose their lives since alcohol drinking is associated with unprotected sex which may increase cases of HIV & AIDS. Many will die due to lack of food as some drink without eating anything," he added.

Many families in the area have turned poor due to drinking since people use all their income, sell family property to fund their drinking sprees.
