Residents of Kanyakwar and Kolwa villages in Kisumu West have protested against the invasion of their communal land by private developers.
They staged demonstrations at one of the allegedly grabbed parcels of land demanding that the government intervenes to save them from land grabbers on the loose in the area.
Some of the alleged grabbers had invaded their property and threatened them with forceful evictions daring them of legal consequences if they revolt.
On Friday, the residents grouped and marched to the site where a new estate is set for construction to vent their anger and frustrations at the hands of the private developers.
They pulled down some of the fences erected by the developers at the site but the developers called the police.
The residents of Kolwa and Kanyakwar villages want the Muhammad Swazuri-led National Lands Commission to move in with haste and help them secure the land.
“Our request is to Dr Muhamad Swazuri, please come and set us free, we do not want to shed blood over what is rightfully our land,” said Washington Nyambuga who lays claim to one of the fenced off parcels.
They said they have documents from various government offices showing that the land is communal.
They accused the government of bias in service delivery saying it is “always fast to negotiate with wealthy individuals at the expense of the common person.”
They said attempts to meet the developers have not yielded much as only workers and contractors were being sent to the sites.
