The accident occurred when a Matatu veered off the road and plunged into a ditch along the road, Thursday. Nine people died on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment. 11 others are admitted at Tawa Hospital.

The protesters who lit bonfires, accused road, security agencies of causing the accident, saying the area was a black spot that had claimed hundreds of lives, yet no measures was being taken.

Speaking at the scene of the accident, Road Safety Association of Kenya chairman David Njoroge called on the Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet to take action against police officers at Kikima police station for paving way for an overloaded Matatu.

He said the Association would sue the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) if they do not change the road's design.
