Residents of Ndungiri have protested over the lack of a functional health facility in the area.
They are now demanding the immediate re-opening of Ndungiri dispensary which has been closed for the last two months. The dispensary was closed in October by the county government after it failed to run it due to limited resources and insufficient payments to health workers.
Speaking on Thursday at Ndungiri shopping centre, the residents complained of having a difficult time in accessing basic healthcare.
“In order to receive medical attention, we are forced to travel all the way to Bahati area and for most of us that is too far and expensive,” Esther Njoki, a resident, said.
Accessing healthcare has become a burden to locals with the worst hit being mothers and their children. The locals blamed devolution for their current suffering.
“Before the devolved governments were put in place, we used to receive better healthcare services,” said John Kamau.
The residents have already petitioned the county government and called for the revival of Ndungiri dispensary and staff it with competent public health professionals.
