Residents of Laini Saba have raised concerns over the increasing number of minors engaging in child labour.
According to the residents, the number has doubled during the April holidays and so far, no authority has stepped in to curb the practice that is putting more children at risk.
Speaking on Wednesday, the locals said that children are taking up jobs that are meant for grownups.
"Most of the children here you will find them pushing carts transporting vegetables or water from one point another. This is really bad for their health because they usually struggle," said Magdaline Achieng, a resident.
They accused parents of not being responsible enough since they have handed down responsibilities of feeding families to children.
"It is really wrong for one to allow a child, who is supposed to be in a school, to be on the street in the name of looking for food for the family," said Miriam Akumu.
One of the minors said that he has no choice since his parent sent him to the streets to look for money meant for upkeep.
"My mother says am fit enough to look for money, therefore, I have to sell water in order to get that money because if I go home empty handed, I will go to bed on an empty stomach," he said.
The residents called on the Nairobi children department to step in and put an end to the situation.
