Residents of Kibera have raised concerns over the increasing number of children who are chewing miraa.
Speaking on Saturday, the residents said that the miraa business is thriving in the area and has also had a huge effect on underage children. They said that chewing of miraa in the area has become a norm in children, and it is getting out of hand.
“The issue of miraa in this area is a big menace that needs to be addressed by the concerned authority. It is fine to chew miraa when you are an adult, but as a child, it is totally wrong because it might lead to the use of other drugs.
The residents have blamed sellers and suppliers of miraa in the area for the problem that is arising.
“This whole thing has been brought about by the increased sellers of miraa. Many adults in this area are consuming miraa something that has led to underage children copying the vice. It is high time it stopped,” said Christopher Opondo.
They are calling on the government to either ban or regulate the sale of miraa in the area before lives of children are ruined.
