The mammoth crowd arrived at the ground very early in the morning, ready to listen to the county boss's Madaraka Day speech only to be informed of his absence by the county secretary, Abdi Sheik.

Angered by the absence of county president from the celebrations, the attendees expressed their disappointment and accused the county boss of trivializing such an event that ought to be treated with utmost respect.

Abdi Hassan, an attendee, claimed that the absence of governor from the event showed the irresponsibility of elected leaders in executing their mandates effectively.

"How can a whole county Governor miss such an important event. Sending juniors as representatives to preside over such events is an insult to the electorate who voted for him. Am not impressed by the conduct of the governor totally," said Abdi.

Yussuf Madle, who braved the chilly morning to be part of the celebrations wondered why a one-day event be given a wide berth by people who have a constitutional mandate to officiate it.

"Governors are the Presidents of their respective counties. So absconding such events only breeds suspicion between the elected leaders and their electorates," quipped Yussuf.

Madaraka Day is a national holiday on which Kenya commemorates the attainment of internal self-rule from Britain in 1963.

The celebrations were replicated in the all 47 counties led by the respective county commissioners.
