Mavoko Sub-County Fire Brigade Supervisor, Duncan Kamatu, has accused area residents living along the river banks of refusing to move to safer zones.

Addressing the press in Athi River Town on Friday, Kamatu said his office has tried to reach out to the residents prior to the looming El~Nino rains in vain.

"People are difficult to deal with. We have talked to several of residents living in danger zones to move but they have adamantly refused to do so," said Kamatu.

Kamatu said the residents who are liable to fall victims when the expected El~Nino rains to fall are waiting for the disaster to strike to move from their dangerous residences.

He mentioned the dangerous places as Kasuitu, Kwa Mang'eli, City Carton, and Kisumu Ndogo. These are mostly slums along River Athi which he noted are prone to flooding whenever it rains heavily.

Kamatu called on the residents to change their adamant decisions to stay put and seek alternative locations to move to as their new residences before the rains fall.

The fire brigade boss said Kasuitu slum was flooded in the year 2006 when heavy rains fell, a situation which led to loss of lives and property.

He said that the call for the move was necessary and important to avoid recurrent of such scenarios when El~Nino rains fall.
