The irate residents were angered by the ignorance of the owner with regards to maintaining hygiene standards, as they had already warned him on several occasions.

The butchery is said to have been operating next to a broken sewer line and the owner, Stephen Otieno, was adamant of resolving the problem.

According to eye witnesses, Otieno was confronted by a trader who asked him to consider the health of his customers, but he was arrogant claiming that the welfare of customers was none of his concerns.

“Other traders and passersby were called to hear what Otieno was saying, and this really angered them. They later demanded that he close down the business and move away,” said Ephraim Akinyo, who was present during the incident.

The residents are said to have been taking precaution from the recent cholera outbreak in the country that has claimed more than 50 lives.

Otieno is alleged to have refused to shut down the butchery, and this forced residents to bundle him together with the meat out of the premises.

Speaking from his home, a few metres from the closed butchery, Otieno said that it was a business rivalry that led to the closure and it had nothing to do with hygiene.

“People have been buying my meat, and I don’t know where this idea came from because the open sewer has been there for long,” said Otieno.
