Hundreds of Bondeni Estate residents in Sultan Hamud area, Machakos County spent the night in the cold after storm waters submerged their houses on Thursday.
They blame their ordeal on the construction of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) that has seen the installation of a fence which has been checking the flow of sand and other debris causing a back-flow of rain water into their houses.
According to Jonathan Katiku, one of the affected residents whose plot was completely submerged forcing his tenants to flee, they have been making complaints to the county water offices, but no action has been taken.
Katiku claims they were told the road near SGR is under National Government, not the Machakos County Government.
He addressed the press at his home on Friday.
"Our children have been forced to sleep in rain after our houses crumbled due to the pressure, we are now counting losses after our investments went into waste," Katiku said.
Most of the houses have been completely destroyed while the ones which survived have cracks and may crumble anytime following heavy rain that has been pounding the area.
They now want the government to find a permanent solution to the problem stating that the situation has been ongoing for several years since the SGR was constructed.
"We only need a trench to be dug here to allow the flow of the rain water. Our clothes, furniture and children's books have been washed away. We don't know how we are going to start over again as we depended on our investments for survival, now we don't know how we will get school fees for our children," said Kituku's wife, Grace Mutie.
