The heavy rains forced hundreds of residents out of their homes, with some being forced to spend Tuesday night on trees and rooftops.

The banks of the National Irrigation Board canal broke sweeping houses in six villages in Bura Sub-County.

Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana said more than 300 households in the village were rescued on Wednesday morning and moved to different camps.

He called on the area residents living along River Tana to heed warnings and move to higher grounds so that they are not affected by floods.

“The county government will provide the affected families with all the basic necessities they need,” said Governor Godhana.

Tana River Red Cross Coordinator Jarred Bombe said that more than 60 percent of the land in the county is flooded with water and about 10,000 people are displaced.

Mr Bombe said residents were forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere within the county as their homes were rendered uninhabitable after floods swept their homes and other belongings away.

“We are in the process of rescuing those who have been affected by the floods. We, however, ask the government to assist the affected families,” said the coordinator.
