Residents of Katisa Village, Kithyoko Location in Yatta sub-county were on Thursday stranded after Mukengesya River bridge was swept away by heavy rains experienced on Wednesday last week.
The situation saw Bodaboda operators stay back at the other side of the road as their daily customers are mostly from Kithyoko and Masinga across the bridge.
One of the Bodaboda operators Steve Kimatu stated that he will be forced to stay at home until the bridge is reconstructed to get back to his normal business.
“I used to wake up at 6am to start my work, but today when I reach at the bridge it had been washed away by the heavy rains on Wednesday night and the River is over flooded,” said Kimatu.
The residents further urged the Machakos County government to intervene and re-build the bridge as soon as possible to ease transport activities in the area.
Mutinda Masai, a Kavenge Village resident, speaking at the scene where more than 100 people were stranded on Thursday, explained that there had been complaints to the area leadership that the bridge was weakening.
“We have previously complained about the situation of the bridge but no step was taken. We urge the county government through the CDF funds to construct the bridge so that transport and business can resume as it was before,” appealed Masai.
The incident forced the area incidents to walk for more than five kilometres to access the next bridge.
