In a statement posted on their website on Monday, the board said the plant that has the capacity to last the city and its environs up to the year 2030 is complete.

The plant set for commissioning anytime now will increase water supply to 48,000 cubic metres from current capacity of just 1,700.

The Kajulu Treatment Plant under Kisumu Long Term Action Plan (LTAP) Package 2 “is now substantially complete” according to the board.

The board further says the plant will bridge water deficit in the lakeside city and its environs, with five water points across the city from where a network of supply channels will be constructed.

“The supply will be connected to a distribution network which includes two new reinforced concrete tank at Kibuye with the capacity of 6,000 cubic metres, a tank at Obwolo of 1,300 cubic metres, a 5,000 cubic metre tank at Mamboleo, one tank at Kanyamedha, and a 250 cubic metre elevated steel tank at LVSWSB compound,” said the statemet.

LTAP is the second phase of the water project started in 2008 by the central government in collaboration with French Development Agency.

The first phase, completed in 2011 has largely been ineffective, as witnessed in the recent water shortage in Kisumu.

“Implementation of LTAP was started in December 2011 and is now substantially complete. As a result of STAP, and LTAP, Kisumu town now has adequate water production capacity sufficient for the town up to 2030 and beyond,” read the statement.
