Residents of the twin estates of Mawanga and Teachers in Nakuru town have been urged to plant trees in large numbers for the coming rainy season.
The Chairman of Mawanga Youth Agenda(MYA) Antony Waweru spoke at the group’s office while unveiling a tree planting program dybbed ‘Green Mawanga’’.
Green Mawanga would be undertaken by the group members dedicated to conserving the environment. The youth leader observed that the fast growing residential and commercial area experiences harsh weather and climatic conditions both during dry and wet seasons due to lack of plenty of vegetation, especially tree cover.
Waweru said the group was planning to embark on a thorough environmental conservation program in the area that would involve planting of trees and grass on streets and public venues. He encouraged residents of the area to support the program.
“We have experienced damning dust, winds, floods and roads damages over the years because there has been a lot of damage to vegetation cover to pave way to construction. But we can reclaim a good environment if we embrace tree planting. Our group will embark on a major tree planting project during the oncoming wet season and we encourage other residents to follow suit by planting trees in their farms and homes,” said Waweru.
Waweru further urged the Nakuru County department of environment to support community based environmental protection program by funding local youth groups to undertake environmental conservation activities.
